Goals

Ran a half marathon today in 1 hour and 54 minutes. That would be my fastest 13.1 miles yet! And I made pancakes for supper. (I did put a bowl of grapes on the table too). But honestly I was just too wiped out from a long day of racing to be creative and nutritionally focused. One lesson at a time in our house. Today's lesson was about achieving goals!

See Mom Run...Bye, Bye!

I am getting brave. I left all three of my kids home to watch t.v. while I ran in my neighborhood. I carry my cell phone and they are all old enough to call if they need anything. But this is a big step for a running mom. I think after I get over the initial "guilt" of leaving them; this little piece of freedom is going to be very, very nice!

Solitude

Solitude is not my usual go-to state of being. I love people and talking the whole time I run. But today me and the road connected in a way that reminded me how wonderful time alone can be. 8 miles of sunshine on a beautiful February day. I love being a runner!

Weird Motivation

My boys got to throw tomahawks this past weekend at a scout camp and I asked if I could have a turn.  Do you know why?
I was wondering if I could have used that skill if I was in the Hunger Games. So of course this card cracks me up. ;)

Believing and Getting It Done

My goal is to run everyday this week. An experiment of sorts....to see if it helps the winter blues that have set in around here. I'm 5 for 5 so far. I believe I can do this!

Exercise Prescription

And then it hit me! I feel horrible not myself when I don't run regularly. I have decided that my exercise prescription must include 4-5 days of running. This is not optional unless I decide that crying over a 10 pound bucket of popcorn and watching 5 episodes of Glee in a row is how I want to spend my nights. But for now I'm shooting for less popcorn, no tears and one episode of Glee. (I really love on demand TV programs).

Injury Prevention

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. I believe this. I think. I've always done some level of strength training as a runner. I lifted weights in high school for fun and running was the torture my volleyball coach made us do. So for me having a strong cardiovascular system came much later in my life than did my ability to bench press or do some weighted squats.
I'm working on strength training some runners this winter. I hope they stay injury free this spring and summer as we start to hit the trails. They are working so hard....that's got to be worth something.

For a few (40) minutes today I felt amazing! Here is the hill workout that nearly killed me. Well, to be honest, it was the kids fighting all day that nearly killed me. I owned the run!

Run the whole 40 minutes at an easy pace (mine was 9:13 min/mile).
10 minutes 1%
5 minutes 2%
2 minutes 3%
2 minutes 4%
2 minutes 5%
2 minutes 4%
2 minutes 3%
5 minutes 2%
10 minutes 1%

I know you are thinking this looks easy. Ha! You try it and let me know how you felt. Did you own it?

Sunshine

52 dang degrees! What!? Yep and my trail run on January 10th looked a lot like this. Muddy! It wasn't all mud though. I had a nice combination of ice, snow, grass and pavement. Did I mention it was 52 degrees?! I live in the Arctic MN....or otherwise known as heaven today. :)

And Humor...

I have to laugh at myself. I am happy and healthy, but I spend more time being serious about being healthy and happy, that I rarely find myself laughing. Life is not just about running 10 miles and feeling like the picture of health and joy........seriously. What cracks you up? ;)

Cute and Sparkly

I have to be honest; I have put make-up on in my car a million times. But I have never really cared what I look like when I'm working out, so you won't catch me carrying a mirror on the treadmill. But I do think it's time to put some fun into my indoor routine. I'm thinking I've gotta get some new running gear (in pink). :)
